Childhood Memories
We all have those special memories from growing up, whether it’s with your immediate family or extended family. I would spend a week with my grandparents every summer. The first thing my grandmother and I would do is go to the fabric store and pick out patterns and fabric so we could sew all week. Because my mom and my grandmom were both Home Economics teachers I got a solid foundation in cooking and sewing, to which I am so thankful! I can still see my grandmom in the kitchen cooking breakfast and hear her singing “Good Morning to You” every morning when I came down the stairs, no matter how old I was. I remember she always had orange or lime sherbert in the freezer. I remember certain smells associated with her house like AquaNet hairspray and Jergens lotion and body powder that she would puff all over her each morning. I remember there was a phone number you could call and get the daily weather. I remember my granddad sitting at their tiny table in the kitchen reading the paper, and they had their daily devotion book tucked between the wall and napkin holder to read together every morning. And I remember my granddad being so proud of his roses he grew each summer so he could take flowers to friends who couldn’t get out of the house or were in the hospital.
We want this site to take you back to those favorite memories you had growing up and hopefully you want to share with your family and grandkids and even friends. I try to keep the recipes I share somewhat simple to fit with today’s busy lifestyles. We want you to find a special recipe that your friends ask you to prepare when you are getting together because you make it the best (mine is my baked beans). Some recipes would be better for a weekend when you have more time at home to prepare the dishes. We also want to make sure you don’t get frustrated. That is why we (will soon) have a special page dedicated to cooking terms and their meanings. And we want it to be fun so we (will also soon) have a page for special food days for the entire year. Use these days to have fun with your kids or even for a fun date night with your spouse. On National Ice Cream Day have ice cream for dinner! You will become the coolest parent ever!
Most of all, create memories with your family and friends! You will be surprised in time what your kids will tell you they remember. It’s probably going to be those times you spent together doing something fun but not elaborate.
